Before Gerber, I worked at a steel company as a welder.  When I applied to work for Gerber Construction it was for a welding position, but I ended up coming on as a laborer in the field.  I was intrigued by a new opportunity to gain experience in something I had never done before. I started as a laborer and I worked my way up into a foreman position.

I have been fascinated by how much I have learned.  I had never really considered working in construction before, but I love working for Gerber because I get to learn something new daily.  Knowing that there are new challenges on a daily basis keeps me excited to show up every single day. I am determined to find out how far I can push myself to continue to learn. When there is something I don’t know how to do, I know I can seek out help from many different leaders at Gerber. It helps me to be able to draw from their knowledge and experience.

Gerber has taught me how to work smarter and value quality in everything I do.  Not only are the people I work with very hard working, but there’s always laughter on the job.  We know how to have a good time, even on the hard, frustrating days.  And we know how to get A LOT of work done while we have fun.  Every day is fulfilling because we work together as a team to get the job done.

We’re a family at Gerber.  Before I worked here, I thought I was family oriented,  but I’ve learned a new meaning of family in a variety of ways.  The values that Gerber has as a company has made a huge impact on me as a person.  They have changed my mindset and my behavior at work, and in my personal life. My relationship at home with my family has strengthened, and the team at Gerber has become a family to me as well.  I appreciate all that they have done for me within the company, and outside of work with my family. They make me want to continue to build with Gerber.

Before working for Gerber Construction, I worked in the oil field as a roughneck on a drilling rig.  While I was laid off from the oil rig, I applied at Gerber Construction. I told them that I might leave at any time to go back to the oil field, but they wanted me on the team anyway.  It gave me a sense of being part of a family right off the bat. Then not long after joining the Gerber team I saw all of the opportunity they had been telling me about. You can really turn this job into a career.

For me, the people are the most exciting thing about working here.  We are a close group, brought together by long days and hard work that create a bond you can’t find in many other places.  I love this company because it is a big company full of great people, but it still has that mom and pop feel to it and there’s a great sense of family.   I love the level of involvement from the owners of the company. I have never worked for a company where an owner will get down in the trenches with the guys for the success of the project and to give the team a morale boost.  It brings a new level of energy to the team and gets people excited.

The other thing that is great about our people, is that we can do it all.  At Gerber, you don’t just master one skill and do the same thing every day.  We do something different every single day. We get to learn how to do every piece of a job, from start to finish.  We don’t have rod busters, carpenters, operators, or finishers. We have people that can do it all! It’s more exciting for me when I get to learn every aspect of a project instead of just focusing on one skill.

I started working for Gerber with zero experience or skills, but they have taught me everything I know over the last few years that I have been here.  They didn’t just teach me half way either. They have spent time with me and taught me the best and most efficient way to get the job done. I have also learned how to be on time and how to always be prepared.  I have learned patience, how to work hard, how to pre-plan, and how to own up to my mistakes. There are a lot of great role models here that can teach you a lot if you listen and pay attention.

The biggest thing that has changed for me since joining the Gerber team is my confidence.  I have been able to accomplish projects where at the first glance, it looks like it can’t be done.  I love learning new things and perfecting my craft. I enjoy seeing a project start and finish from the ground up.  At the end of the day, this is what brings me fulfillment in my work.

If you have a good work ethic, a good attitude, and you want a job that you can be proud of that is more than just a 9 to 5, Gerber is a great place for you.  Gerber Construction has always taken care of me. And they gave me a path to succeed. To me, that is all I can ask for from a company.

Before I came to Gerber Construction, I worked in a Quality Control position for a mining company.  I wanted to try construction because I love to build stuff, and I wanted to be able to see my accomplishments and my finished work.  Now I get to build things at a large scale. It’s awesome!

The people I work with aren’t just my coworkers.  I consider them my friends. A job is never fun if you don’t get along with the people you work with.  At Gerber, we really are a team. We all work hard together, side by side, every single day. It’s motivating to be part of a hard working team, especially when the job is tough.  We can lean on each other to get the job done.

There are a lot of challenges on a construction project.  It’s a great thing to have such knowledgeable people on the team helping to get it done, and it feels great to solve problems.  It’s learning how to crack the code and keep accomplishing task after task after task until the job is done. The beauty of construction is that you get to work hard together and get stuff done.  There is a huge sense of accomplishment when you can see what you’re building right in front of you. You can go home each day knowing that you have made a meaningful impact.

I have learned so much in the past 3 years that I have been here.  I have learned that I have the ability to do more than I think I can.   Gerber is a great place to work. It feels good to know that I can move up the ladder here.  That is something I love about this place. I am a way better, happier, and more financially stable person since I have been working for Gerber.

I came to work for Gerber because of their great reputation.  I worked for a residential repair company before, and I wanted exposure to the world of structural concrete.  I have learned something new every single day that I have been here. The people that I am surrounded by are hard workers and great teachers.  It makes for a really great company.

There is so much more to know about concrete at the commercial and structural level than there is at the residential level.  I face many challenges at work because I am new to it, but my leaders on the job teach me what I need to know so that I can perform at a high level.  From the machines we operate, plan overview, concrete pour techniques, setting structural steel embeds, rebar tying techniques, grading and surveying, and all of the power tools and hand tools that we use, I learn new things daily.

Lance Gerber takes an hour of his day outside of work hours to teach new team members who are willing to show up early to learn.  I have taken the opportunity to attend his class and it has helped me to better my chance of becoming an asset to this company and has greatly expanded my knowledge in the field.

Gerber is full of hard working people that will accept you as family.  Hard work is an attribute that carries over into your personal life. Working hard every day for Gerber has only made me a better father and a better husband. I am able to take that same mindset of completing tasks, and quality performance into everything I do away from work.

If you are afraid of hard work, or learning how to do new things every day, then Gerber is not for you.  But if you can work hard, listen, and take initiative in your daily tasks, then Gerber will help push you to learn more, do more, and be more.  You can really turn this job into a career.
